Here is an extract from the short story "The Story of Rama and Sita".

A Token of Appreciation - Extract

Long ago in India there lived a wise old king called Dasarantha. He was kind and he had four sons. His wife Kaikeyi had borne him a son called Bharatha. From his wife Sumitra he had two sons called Lukshmana and Shatrughna and with his wife Kaushalya, he had Rama who was a brave fighter. Rama was married to a beautiful princess named Sita.

The old king, Dasarantha, grew old and frail and one day announced that he was stepping down and he had chosen his son Rama to be his successor. The people cheered as Rama was a popular choice but there was one person who did not join in. It was Kalkeyi, Dasarantha's second wife who immediately went to the king.

"Hold on a minute! Why Rama? What about my son Bharatha?" she said forcefully. "My lord, many years ago, I saved your life on the battlefield and you had promised me two wishes. I want them granted now". " I remember," answered Dasarantha honourably "Go ahead and ask for anything you want and it shall be granted. This king never breaks his promise". "I want my son Bharatha to be king instead of Rama and I want Rama to be banished to the forest for fourteen years!" demanded Kalkeyi.
